A Case for Scenery – Vol two: Rocks (BluRay)

Mountains soar to heights over a thousand feet in the air from the valley floor below. Massive cliffs dwarf trains that pick their way gingerly over rocky shelves and up stone-lined canyons. Vegetation struggles to survive in the hostile environment of rocky crags and crevasses. It’s all part of the rugged and majestic vertical scenery featured on the Oregon, California and Eastern Railway’s mainline between lumber towns Klamath Falls and Lakeview, Oregon. And, its all part of one of the largest, museum quality model railroads in the world. Realistic operations and scenery are the hallmarks of this HO scale model railroad open to the public at the Colorado Model Railroad Museum at the Greeley Freight Station in Greeley, Colorado. Visitors can stroll down wide aisles viewing spectacular scenery vistas stretching in every direction.

Playing a leading role in the believability of this 5,500 sq. foot creation is the realistic rock outcroppings and cliffs that are rapidly becoming the trademarks of this spectacular model railroad open for public viewing. Model Railroaders who visit the museum invariably ask about the techniques utilized in making such realistic rockwork that sets the layout apart from most model railroads. Because the museum has a policy of not holding back on construction secrets, the museum staff, along with designer/builder David Trussell has decided to make public in a series of videos the process that brought to reality this one-of-a-kind HO scale creation. The second video in the series titled “Building a Case for Scenery” covers the making of rock molds, combining them into believable cliffs an crags, and realistically staining them to match rocks located in the area where the modeled railroad actually ran

As a bonus, he will offer some tips on increasing the believability of rock work and its relationship to the railroad that runs through it. All of these techniques have been employed in the construction of the museum-quality OC&E Railway layout located in Greeley and open to the public. Museum hours fluctuate during holidays, but regular summer hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10-4 p.m. with Sunday afternoons open from 1-4. During the off-season between Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends, the museum is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10-4 and Sundays from 1-4. The railroad is dispatched and operated by volunteers who can number in the dozens during weekend sessions.
